An Old Methodist Tune and its Composer

Yorkshire, and particularly the West Riding, has long been famous for its Psalmody and congregational singing; and no doubt many of your readers could give interesting particulars of some of the the composers of its native tunes. The following, relating to a well-known Methodist tune, "Eccles", may be of interest. It was composed by Richard Boggett, of Kippax, near leeds, who declared himself to be entirely self-taught and who published, as the title-page sets forth, "An Original Set of Psalm & Hymn Tunes, suitable for Congregational Worship, &c."
